It can also be used at home as a cleaning and disinfecting chemical for our toilets and bathrooms, as well as for mopping the floors. It is mostly used in hospitals for these same functions.
By using the straightforward procedure below, you can start making bleach on a modest scale and get 10 liters of high-quality, active bleach.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Always wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) - this refers to protective clothing, helmets, gloves, face shields, goggles, facemasks and/or respirators or other equipment designed to protect the wearer from injury.
2. Use extreme caution when handling all chemicals, especially caustic soda and hydrochloric acid (HCL); they can cause burn when in contact with the skin. Do not bend over the mixture when adding chemicals in or inhale the chemicals in any way to avoid the choking fumes they emit, this goes with chlorine too. In short, handle all chemicals with caution and don't inhale any of them.
3. Do not taste any chemical and avoid eating in the production area.
4. Do proper clean up after each production and store chemicals properly
5. Keep out of reach of children, pets and unauthorized persons.
Use common sense - Safety is in your hands. Take responsibility for your actions, work safely and protect yourself along with those around you.
Consequently, you should not be terrified of handling chemicals. It's similar to the measures we take in our daily lives when handling hot water, cooking with gas, frying, ironing, etc. Common sense is required!
Chemical Formula for Producing 10 Liters of Bleach
1. Calcium Hypochlorite (Chlorine) 500g
2. Caustic Soda (lye) 250g
3. Soda Ash (Dense) 500g
4. Sodium Sulphate 250g
5. Water 10 liters
STEP 1: Chlorine 500g should be dissolved in 9 liters of clean water and thoroughly stirred for about 15 minutes.
Step 2: Add 250g of caustic soda into 1 liter of clean water, stir well completely dissolve it. Please, always add lye to water not the other way round to avoid volcano effect! Turn your face aside so you don't inhale the fumes (use extreme caution when handling any chemicals, especially caustic soda; do not bend over the mixture when adding it in as it emits a choking fume). Then, pour the mixture into the chlorine solution and stir thoroughly for about 10 minutes.
STEP 3: Add Soda ash 500g into the chlorine and caustic Soda solution and stir very well for about 15 minutes.
STEP 4: Finally, add 250g of sodium sulphate to the solution and thoroughly mix for about 10 minutes.
NOTE: After production, cover your mixture and give it a full 24 hours to settle. Leave it for 48 - 72 hours to properly settle and be more active if you're not in a haste.
You should carefully pour the bleach that has accumulated on top into an empty bucket after the wait is over.
Place a funnel in a keg, line it with a cloth to catch any particles and pour the bleach through.
To gather the residual bleach, sift the leftover material through a cotton towel. When sieving, put on gloves or nylon - avoid handling with bare hands.
When the moist residue in the sieving cloth has dried, it can be used as your cleaning (scrubbing) powder.
